Īfter World War II, Central Europe was divided by the Iron Curtain (as agreed by the Big Three at the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference) into two parts, the capitalist Western Bloc and the communist Eastern Bloc, although Switzerland, Yugoslavia, and Austria declared neutrality. Respectively, countries in Central Europe have historical, cultural and geopolitical ties to these wider regions of Europe. ![]() The countries that make up Central Europe have historically been, and in some cases continue to be, divided into either Eastern or Western Europe. ![]() Hungary and parts of Poland were later part of the Habsburg monarchy. Large parts of the Kingdom of Hungary were controlled by the Ottoman Empire. With the exception of Germany, Central European countries had no colonies or overseas territories. Countries in this region are considered to have historical, social, and cultural similarities.
